MEMBERS' AREA

A Members' Area within the website is in the process of being created.  This will contain sections of the Hedges Study main database and it will be possible to  search this data.  Initially the data will be  Birth, Marriages and Deaths from the GRO Index, the Census for England and Wales from 1841 through 1911, and transcribed Wills held by the Study.  A full description follows.

Please return to this page from time to time to check on progress.

G.R.O. INDEX

The General Register Office Index of the civil registration of

Births, Marriages and Deaths from 1st July 1837

The Hedges Study database contained the following GRO Index entries with additions being made on a regular basis -

Births from 1837 to 1940 and consists of 11,608 entries *

Marriages from 1837 to 1949 and consists of 7,831 entries

Deaths from 1837 to 1931 and consists of 6,170 entries

The above will being included in the online database once the data has been checked for errors.  The Volume and Page numbers are not included.

However, there are restrictions in order to avoid any entries relating to persons who are still living.  The cut-off dates for Births will be 1900 and for Marriages 1930 with Deaths included in their entirety.  These cut-off dates will be reviewed on a yearly basis.

I appreciate that the GRO Index is readily available but it is useful to have all HEDGES data en bloc.

*  includes Regimental and Army Births

CENSUS FOR ENGLAND AND WALES

1841 – 1911

The Census information in the Hedges Study database is not yet complete but I am adding more on a regular basis.  This data is being checked in readiness for the online database.

It is interesting to see how HEDGES numbers have increased over the years.   The following table indicates the date on which each Census was taken, the number of Hedges recorded

Date of Census

Number of Hedges

6/7 June 1841

1,811

30/31 March 1851

2,040

7/8 April 1861

2,150

2/3 April 1871

2,860

3/4 April 1881

3,415

5/6 April 1891

3,591

31 March/1 April 1901

4,464

2/3 April 1911

5,019

The numbers given for each Census are by no means accurate as, I am sure you will appreciate, there are some Hedges listed who are not Hedges but similarly some who are listed under another name.

It might be appropriate to include here a reminder of the format for ages in the 1841 Census as the majority of ages were rounded down –

Exact ages were given for children up to the age of 14 inclusive.  For those aged 15 and over ages are given in five-year groups and rounded down to the lower age e.g. 15 – 19 given as 15;  20 – 24 given as 20.  Of course people did not always give their correct age either because they did not know their age or for concealment for some reason.

TRANSCRIBED WILLS

I hold a large number of Wills which I have transcribed or are in the process of being transcribed.  The online database will contain a list of the completed transcriptions.

The transcriptions themselves will not form part of the online data.  However the Members' Area will include a means to contact me and request a copy of a particular Will.

OCCASIONAL  NEWSLETTER

A Newsletter will also be included in the Members' Area.  This will not be on a regular basis but produced as time permits and when there is sufficient material to make it interesting and worthwhile.

If you have any ideas or suggested articles for this Newsletter please contact me
