CRESSWELL HEDGES
1850 - 1879
Cresswell Hedges was born 21st November 1850 St. Pancras, the fourth of nine known children of William and Lucy Evanson (nee Walls) Hedges. He was baptised at St. Barnabas Church, Kensington on 14th January 1857 when he was 7 years old. Three brothers and a sister were also baptised on that day, the eldest being Frederick who was 9 years old.
William Hedges was born circa 1819 in Gloucestershire the son of William Hedges, a servant.
Lucy Evanson Walls was the daughter of John Edward and Sarah Walls and was born 25th August 1823 and baptised at St. Marylebone Middlesex on 28th September 1823. It appears that Lucy was the youngest of four girls and one boy the eldest being Sarah born circa 1815.
At the time of his marriage on 25th May 1845 at All Saints Church, St. Marylebone, Cresswell’s father was a butcher but later became a coachman.
Cresswell served as a Private (Number 1495) in the 9th Lancers and died 11 December 1879 at Arghandi, killed in action - gun shot and sword cuts during the second Afghan War. More information about the events of 11 December 1879 can be found at
